Cold, Flu & COVID: Know the Difference and Stay Protected

Respiratory illness season is here. In Utah, colds, influenza (flu), and COVID-19 all circulate between September and March, with the highest activity between late fall and early winter. Understanding the differences—and getting vaccinated—can help keep you and your loved ones healthy.

A chart titled 'Cold, Flu, and COVID-19 Overview' compares symptoms of common cold, influenza, and COVID-19 in a table format. It lists symptoms like fever, fatigue, cough, sneezing, loss of taste/smell, headache, body aches, and onset, describing their commonality or severity in each illness.

When to Seek Care:

  • Fever above 103°F or lasting more than 3 days

  • Shortness of breath or chest pain

  • Severe sore throat with swollen glands

  • Symptoms improving, then suddenly worsening

  • Inability to keep fluids down

Testing Options at Our Clinic:

  • Rapid flu tests (results in ~15 minutes)

  • COVID-19 rapid antigen & PCR tests

  • Combination respiratory virus testing

Why Early Vaccination Matters

Flu activity often increases in October, with peaks between December and February. The flu vaccine takes about two weeks to build protection—so a mid-to-late September shot means you’re covered before the season gets into full swing.

Fun fact: Studies show that people vaccinated in September or early October maintain strong protection through the entire flu season.

COVID-19 Considerations

COVID-19 continues to circulate year-round, with spikes in the colder months.

  • Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given together—it’s safe and convenient.

  • If you develop symptoms such as fever, cough, or loss of taste/smell, we recommend testing within the first 48 hours.

  • Early treatment for eligible patients can reduce the risk of severe illness.
